Zamzam water, a sacred source of sustenance, holds a special place in the hearts of Muslims around the world. Muslims who visit Makkah during Hajj and Umrah Pilgrimage bring back this water as a souvenir of their journey.
Zamzam water is found in a 35-metre-deep desert well around the Kaaba. It was discovered during Prophet Ibrahim’s lifetime several thousands of years ago. Scientific research has proven that Zamzam water has several benefits for the human body. It is rich in bicarbonate, vitamins, and other minerals like calcium and magnesium, which help to detoxify the skin and body.
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“The water of Zamzam is water of great virtue, which first sprang forth when Jibril (peace be upon him) struck (the earth) with his wing” – (Sahih al-Bukhari 3364)
Let’s discuss in detail some of Zamzam water’s benefits, which have been proven by scientific research from around the world.
What is Zamzam Water?
The Zamzam water well is located in the Holy City of Makkah. It is located on the eastern side of the Kaaba. It is believed to be miraculously provided by Allah (SWT) during the time of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Isma’il (Ishmael).
Water from this source is the cleanest and has several advantages. Millions of Muslims visit every year during Umrah and Hajj, consume the Zamzam water and also take some back to their home. The well draws water from a 35-meter-deep Wadi alluvium. In Islam, it’s called “Sacred Water.” It has great significance and is highly valued by Muslims.
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“The best water on the face of the earth is the water of Zamzam. In it is food for nourishment and healing for illness” – (al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 11011)
The Story of Zamzam Water
The story of Zamzam water is very important in Islam. According to Islamic tradition, Hajar, the wife of Prophet Ibrahim, was left in the barren desert of Makkah with her infant son, Isma’il. In desperate search of water, she ran back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times.
The Quran also mentions this incident:
“Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs ‘umrah – there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good – then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing” – (Surah Baqarah 2:158)
After running back and forth, Hajar could not find water or anyone for help. Then the young Ismail (AS) began scrubbing the sand with his feet where a well was located, and suddenly, water gushed from it. After noticing the water running, she said, “Zam Zam,” a phrase meaning “stop.”
The running of back and forth between Safa and Marwah seven times is now an integral part of the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage that millions of Muslims perform every year. It is called ‘Sa’ee’.

Zamzam water is not just a physical nourishment but also a spiritual one. For Muslims, it is a symbol of divine mercy and an integral part of their faith. Drinking Zamzam water is believed to bring blessings, healing, and protection. It is often consumed with prayers and supplications, invoking Allah’s blessings for various needs.
It is reported that the noble companion Abdullah ibn Abbas often recited supplication before drinking Zamzam water:
اللهم إني أسألك علماً نافعاً، ورزقاً واسعاً، وشفاء من كل داءٍ
“Allahumma inni as’aluka ’ilman nafi’an, wa rizqan waasi’an, wa shifa’an min kulli daa’in”

(Sunan Ibn Majah 925)
